Comprehensive clinical care
Assessment, treatment and ongoing management delivered in a purpose-built therapeutic environment rather than an adapted one.
Home/Rehabilitation Center
The long-term goalOur founder learned what good mental health infrastructure looks like as a patient — and, as a building professional, why it works. Bringing that standard to Ghana is the foundation's central long-term project.
Every outreach day we run makes the same argument. You can feed someone, bathe them, cut their hair and send them back to the same street — or there can be somewhere for them to go.
Ghana has a real opportunity to invest in modern, patient-centred mental healthcare infrastructure comparable to leading international facilities. That conclusion came out of extensive research and visits to mental health institutions across the country, and it is the reason this project exists.
The vision is a center of excellence that integrates international best practice in healthcare design with a full continuum of care, so that treatment, recovery and a return to independent life happen in one place rather than three.
Assessment, treatment and ongoing management delivered in a purpose-built therapeutic environment rather than an adapted one.
Structured rehabilitation that treats recovery as a process with stages, not a discharge date.
Movement, activity and rest designed into the building, because they are part of the treatment.
Practical skills that make independent work possible again after treatment.
Programmes that prepare both the person and their community for going home.
Patient-centred layouts, considered safety systems and healing spaces — the details our founder studied as a patient and as a builder.
While being treated at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Maryland, our founder — a building consultant by profession — studied the place as carefully as he experienced it: the layouts, the sightlines, the safety systems, the spaces that let people rest.
He came away certain that thoughtful infrastructure measurably improves mental health outcomes, and that Ghana does not need to import the buildings, only the standard.
The centre is a real, planned project — currently at the architectural design stage, with drawings being developed. It is not yet a building with a ribbon waiting to be cut, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Capacity, final site, clinical partnerships, licensing and total cost are still being worked through. We would rather publish the stage we are actually at than numbers we cannot yet stand behind, and we will update this page as the design and the funding firm up.
What we can say is what it will take from here: institutional partners, government engagement, clinical expertise and capital. If you represent a government agency, development agency, healthcare institution, philanthropic foundation or corporate donor, this is the conversation we most want to have.
Research and visits to mental health institutions across Ghana, and years of community outreach showing the need first-hand.
Drawings in development, applying the patient-centred design principles our founder studied as both a patient and a building professional.
Securing the institutional partners, clinical expertise and funding needed to move from drawings to ground.
Mental health care in Ghana should be accessible, inclusive and free from stigma — and the places we deliver it in should say so before anyone speaks. Bluebird Kids Foundation & Mental Health
Gifts directed to the center are held for this project. Partnerships and institutional funding are welcome — and needed.
